Fight fans are in for a real treat this December as Amir Khan takes on Devon Alexander at the at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Khan is looking to set up a massive showdown with Floyd Mayweather off the back of a victory over Alexander, but it would be foolish to look past the dangerous American and former world champion. Bookmaker Betfair have put Amir Khan in as the 2/5 favourite to win the bout on December 13th, while Devon Alexander can be backed at odds of 19/10. Although Khan’s recent record is arguably the more impressive of the two fighters, Alexander has only lost two fights in his career to Khan’s three and this upcoming clash may not be quite as one sided as the bookmaker’s odds suggest.
A fight against Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao is in no way guaranteed if he should manage to beat Devon Alexander, but another impressive performance will make it very difficult for these two men to continue to avoid Amir Khan. Mayweather in particular has been playing games with the Bolton born fighter and while the unbeaten world champion would be an overwhelming favourite, Khan is an opponent who would cause money problems. Amir Khan’s fighting style with his fast hands and powerful shots is arguably something that Floyd Mayweather is not looking forward to facing, especially as he heads into the latter stages of his career. Other than Pacquiao v Mayweather though, it’s the biggest fight that can be made in this division at the moment and one that Amir Khan is desperate to secure.
Following successive defeats, Amir Khan left the tutelage of Freddie Roach and teamed up with Virgil Hunter. That decision appears to have paid off, with Khan since winning three from three and regaining a lot of credibility as a serious contender for major honours. This bout with Devon Alexander is very much a career defining fight for Khan. A win would see the former WBA Light Welterweight champion cement his position in the top four in the welterweight division, while a defeat would pretty much end all hopes of a showdown with Floyd Mayweather. The odds compilers at Betfair obviously believe that a victory for Khan is the most likely outcome here and while the odds are pretty short for the average punter to be getting involved with, some of the bigger players are sure to be snapping up the 2/5 on offer about the Englishman.
As far as Devon Alexander is concerned, a win over Khan would very much help undo some of the damage to his reputation caused by the points defeat to Shawn Porter at the back end of last year. Victory over Jesus Soto Karass in the summer will likely have given Alexander a bit of a confidence boost and he is sure to fancy his chances against Khan. Although Amir has looked more in control since joining Virgil Hunter’s camp, he has a history of getting sucked into slugfests by various opponents and Alexander will probably try to draw Kahn wild side out during the course of this bout come December 13th.
