The Time is Now!
I've had a hard time writing recently. There's been a lot going on in my life (Trying to find a new job, new apartment), but also...I've been feeling a bit bummed about boxing. Perhaps I’m taking the Pacquiao/Marquez decision a lot harder than I normally would, but... I just don’t get it.
I predicted a ninth round knockout. I anticipated Pacquiao to just have too much speed for Marquez. I expected Juan Manuel to be sluggish at welterweight. I thought that I was going to be right.
And yet I wasn’t. Don’t get me wrong, the guy I predicted to win won, but... it’s just not sitting well with me. Anyway, I really don’t want to talk about this fight and the decision. Instead, let’s talk about another person who should be taking every opportunity he can right now.
Floyd Mayweather Jr.. Those of you who read this blog know that while I do admire his sublime skills, I’m not a big fan of his persona outside the ring. And I’m also not a big fan of his opponent selection and stance on random testing as soon as Manny Pacquiao was brought up as a potential opponent.
However if I were Floyd Mayweather I would make a press conference right this minute and say, “Manny Pacquiao, I take back all the absurd things I may have said about you possibly taking illegal substances. Let’s have this fight right now and there will be no Olympic style drug tests. We’ll do it like we’ve always done it before. However you want the testing to be done, your will be done.”
Come on, Floyd. Stop having Leonard Ellerbe tease the media by hinting at possibly fighting Manny, just man up (You do like to remind us that you are your own boss) and say it. Quit having Ellerbe just say, “The little guy.” You aren’t afraid to say his name, are you?
Look, you saw the fight, don’t act like you didn’t. I saw it and I posted afterwards that if I had to pick a winner between the two of you, should you ever get in the ring, I would be putting my money on Money. I may not like you Floyd, but I like money and if I bet, I bet to win.
Marquez was making Pacquiao look foolish and you could do the same thing if not worse. Hell, I never thought about it, but you could probably knock him out if you wanted to. So look, for the sake of boxing and your legacy, come out and say, “Manny Pacquiao, let’s give the people what they want.”
And God help you if you decide to call out Erik Morales.
