BBBRandom thoughts on the current boxing scene

by Andrew Schweitzer

I recently returned from Las Vegas where (Aside from various other activities) I was hoping I would be able to catch an interview with the always quotable Roger Mayweather. However upon calling the gym I was told that he wasn't in that day. So instead of finally getting an answer to some questions I've been longing to ask ("Seriously, A-Side Meth?"), I've decided to settle on doing a blog on my random thoughts on the current boxing scene:
  • I had an awesome time in Vegas. However the next time I go, I'm definitely going the weekend of a major fight. Yes, I know my boss told me no more vacations for the rest of the year but I frankly don't care.
  •
  • As I indicated in an earlier post I'm looking for Tim Bradley to beat Devon Alexander in their upcoming 'Superfight'. Don't be too surprised though if Bradley gets off the canvas like he did against Kendall Holt.
  •
  • I'm still a bit iffy about the new design that The Ring  has given itself however for the most part I do think it is an improvement.
  •
  • One thing I would like to see The Ring do from now is put pictures of the fights on the cover. The last time they did a cover like that was the March 2008 issue with Miguel Cotto landing a good right hand against Shane Mosley. Ever since then it's just been one issue after the other with one fighter just posing on the cover. Sometimes it works but most of the time it just looks boring.

  • There's been a lot of talk about the slow ticket sales for Bradley/Alexander and too be honest I don't know why that's shocking to people. You're not going to sell out the Pontiac Silverdome with a fight between two fighters who aren't known to the general public.

  • On the other hand, just because numbers are low doesn't mean it's going to be a bad fight.
  • I keep hearing a lot of Manny Pacquiao fans claim that Floyd Mayweather Jr. won't fight the Pound for Pound king yet because he's waiting for Pacquiao to "get old". I'm not sure whether these fans think that Mayweather is Dorian Gray or if they don't know that Mayweather is older than Pacquiao.

  • First Hopkins/Pascal and now Pacquiao/Mosley has been snatched up by Showtime. Yikes! I hope Showtime doesn't become known for airing the fights that even HBO doesn't want to put on.

  • Am I the only one really hoping David Haye will man up and just fight the Klitschkos. Seriously, David, all that build up you made about yourself that got us excited about the heavyweight division has evaporated. Screw your worthless WBA belt and it's even more unworthy mandatory challengers and just fight Wladimir. It'll be your legacy that will be hurt if it doesn't happen. You can say otherwise but deep down you know I'm right.
