BOXER BIO: Orlando Canizales

OrlandoCanizalesThumbOrlando Canizales is a former world champion, that was born & raised in Laredo, Texas.  In fact, he still resides there. He has an excellent amateur record of 108 wins and 12 losses.  Canizales’ professional career lasted 15 years, from 1984 to 1999 and in that time he compiled a record of 50 wins, 5 losses, 1 draw.  Canizales has never been stopped in his career which is due to both his solid chin and excellent defensive skills.


Orlando Canizales has won both the NABF and USBA titles before fighting for the IBF Bantamweight title against against Kelvin Seabrooks in 1988.  Canizales defeated Seabrooks by stopping him in the 15th round and acquired his first world title in the process.  He would go on to defend the title 16 times.  Canizales would give up the IBF belt and leave the bantamweight division to challenge Wilfredo Vazquez for the WBA Super Bantamweight title.  Canizales lost a split decision to Vazquez.

Orlando Canizales would go on to fight for another 4 years, winning a few more titles along the way and ending his career as a featherweight.  He got inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2009.  Many of his fights can be found on YouTube.
