Slip help 1 Year, 4 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi,

I'm just a beginner boxer and I have no formal training. There are no boxing gyms around where I live. Anyway, I'm having trouble with "the slip". Whenever I do that move, I feel like I'm about to tip over because I'm so off-balanced. Any advice?

This may sound silly, but have you read the section on slipping and watched the videos? www.boxing4free.com/defense/46-the-slip.html

Also, you could always take a half-step in the direction of the slip to maintain balance.

I have. I think that my stance is the problem. Is there a section that teaches about boxing stance?

I did have a section. However, when we switched over to this new layout it got lost. If you look at any of the punching videos on my site, you will see the basic stance.

In a nut shell, if you're a right hander,

- put you left foot out front, slightly turned to the right.
- spread your feet about shoulder width apart, then take a half-step back with your rear leg.
- keep the knees bent
- keep the rear heel slightly raised (acts as a spring)
- keep your elbows in, left hand slightly ahead of the right
- keep your chin down

Thankyou for the help.

On another note, is a bob the same as a weave?

This is a subject of much debate. You can speak to 5 different trainers, and they will give you 5 different names for the same technique.

Some same slip, others say bob.

Some say bob & weave, others say roll.

Since a bob & weave/roll starts with a slip motion, it makes sense to say bob & weave, but these days I just say "roll" to avoid confusion.
