The Shield
Shielding, commonly known as blocking, is simply using your arm to absorb the blows delivered by your opponent. Shielding is best used against hooks, overhands, and wild punches.
The Parry
The parry, many times referred to as the catch (although they are two different things), is nothing more than a slight wave of the hand. It is used as a defensive move against straight punches, usually at mid-range. The majority of the time the parry is used against the jab.
The Slip
To slip a punch means to get your head out of the way. There are several ways to slip a punch and each way has merit. In some cases, one technique works better than others for a particular situation. I will be showing 3 variations of the slip. The key with any form of slipping is not to exaggerate the movement. You do not want to dip or bend so far that you hurt your back, lose your balance or take yourself out of position to counter.
The Weave
I honestly believe that is you could do the Tango, Merengue, the Salsa or any one of those Latin dances, you have a good chance of being a good boxer. Especially a defensive boxer. The weave is not unlike a dance move. Simple, elegant, and effective. The weave is used against hooks and wide punches.
The Shoulder Roll
There will be times in a boxing match when you will not be in position to slip a punch, or get your hands up in time to block/cover or even parry a punch.
