I have been asked, a lot, who I think will win between former world champion boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. and UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor. Some of the people that ask know nothing about fighting in general, some follow mixed martial arts, but they all have one thing in common; they don’t know jack about boxing. When they ask me this question my first response is to laugh. I’m a jerk, I can admit to that, but the question is ridiculous. This fight is causing my work-place to be a hostile environment. Frankly, it’s feeling like the 2016 U.S. Presidential election again.
These folks are asking me who will win a boxing match between someone who is has 84 wins, 8 losses as amateur and undefeated in 49 fights as a pro against someone who has 0 wins and 0 losses in professional boxing. It does appear McGregor has some amateur experience. However, he did not fight the kind of competition Mayweather did in his amateur days.
Mixed martial artists seeking to improve their stand up game don’t go to a Kenpo school or take a trip to a Gracie martial arts academy, they go to a boxing gym. In combat sports, boxers have the best hands. If you say otherwise, you’re delusional. Again, McGregor is going to take on a master boxer in the master boxer’s environment.
Of course you can make the argument that Floyd Mayweather hasn’t fought in two years, he’s 40, and that McGregor is young and still competing. Doesn’t matter. Floyd hasn’t left the gym, Floyd has experience that Conor doesn’t, Floyd has seen every variation of boxer there can be in his MANY years of boxing history. Look, Mayweather would never beat McGregor in an MMA match; he’d be out of his element. Same goes for McGregor; you don’t go to a boxer’s ring and think you’re going to win unless you got a screw loose. Sure “anything can happen” which I hear a lot, but the thing about someone like Floyd Mayweather, he takes full advantage of “The Sweet Science” and as a result, minimizes the chances of something freaky happening like a wild punch getting through.
Here’s what the result will be; Mayweather wins a decision and McGregor laughs at all the suckers who paid for this fight while making over $100 million in that loss.
