WBO strips Mayweather of title. And..?

WBOLooking at various news sources over the internet – ESPN, USA Today, Washington Post, CBS Sports, Daily Mail, etc. – you’d think something big happened in the world of boxing.  “Mayweather stripped of WBO belt he won by beating Pacquiao” read a headline from the New York Daily News.  So friggin what??

Why is this news?  This sort of thing happens all the time in boxing.  What is the difference now?  I honestly don’t know for certain.  I’m guessing it has to do with Floyd Mayweather’s name being attached to the story.  Again, what is the big deal?

I feel like the media and Mayweather’s camp are trying to make this a bigger for promotional reasons.  “It’s a complete disgrace,” Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe told ESPN.com.  Really Leonard?

Floyd Mayweather doesn’t need a title for us to know he’s the champ.  He would be saving money on sanctioning fees anyway.  Some fighters like Roy Jones Jr. lived for multiple belts, even from organizations that no one heard of.  Then Marco Antonio Barrera, without a belt around his waist, started beating everyone in the featherweight division.  He became known as the “King of the Featherweights“.  He was the guy to beat.  He was the champ without a belt.

This business of Mayweather having his belt stripped as a result of not paying the sanctioning fee is not news.  This is just another day in professional boxing.  If you think I’m wrong, let me know in the comments below.  If you don’t comment, I’ll assume you agree, which is good; I like to feed the ego.
